Technical Details of Features:

  • New Enemy Design: A massive central opponent unlocks new abilities as turns progress. The number of turns you have until an ability opens up is tracked via “Rage Gauges” which can be stunned or sapped by cards, or even destroyed entirely.

  • Creature Combat: This game features full creature combat and synergies, which while common in multiplayer card games, are rare in single-player games like ours. This means you can summon an army of creatures with a health and attack stat and have them interact with each other and the opponent with more ability variety (or “design space”) than other games in the genre.

  • Gift System: Powerful Gifts can be formed from Beasts you’ve hunted to create new strategies, but they also will weigh down your Spirit if you take only the largest and heaviest Gifts. This creates some interesting decision points where you decide if the next tier of Weight is worth entering.

  • Unique Style: We present a surreal, distinct, and darker form of fantasy art, VFX and sound.

Description

Journey through the desolate wastelands and hunt down colossal Beasts in this single-player roguelike card game for PC! But beware, each Beast becomes enraged as you fight, unlocking new abilities to consume your creatures or counterattack your spells. Carve profane gifts from these behemoths and grow stronger to serve your Patron Deity!

Hunt the Beasts

Test your wits and your deck against titanic creatures called Beasts, who evolve as you fight them! Feel the tension of fighting a giant and the excitement of triumphing against the odds with each encounter.

Their Rage Builds

As you fight a Beast, their rage will grow and they will unlock new abilities! Beat the whimsical Gilded Grifter at his cup game to gain an advantage. Or, feed The Yearning Woods' Consume ability, which fills its health bar and its stomach... until eventually it bursts!

Cut Off their Limbs!

Fight back against the Beasts by infesting them with various swarms of insects, setting parts of them on fire, even cutting off limbs and depriving them of their abilities. Interaction lies at the heart of Acolyte of the Altar and everything connects to the Beasts.

Gifts From Above... Or Below?

After slaying a Beast for the first time, you can offer their body to your Patron, who will carve a new Gift. At the start of a new area, your Patron will bless you with a choice of these gifts that can dramatically alter how you hunt. Take the Crumbling Monument's Skyscraper Sword and make your tallest creatures even bigger. Or capture the elusive Mini Jelly who will zap enemies when you cast spells! However, these profane gifts weigh down your spirit by varying amounts, so be careful with your choices!

Company Story

Black Kite Games is a small and passionate team of individuals who love strategic games. We aim to create a wholesome environment that gives people the encouragement and freedom to push the boundaries of their talent.

We were founded in 2020 by Cameron Reid, the lead designer and programmer, who was previously a game designer at Rockstar San Diego on Red Dead Redemption 2. We formed and bonded over a love of not only card games and roguelikes but the feeling you get when you have a great run or a unique experience in one of these games. Our goal is to create a game that takes the pockets of joy players have when they beat that big boss or pull off that crazy synergy, and have each encounter invoke that. We are creating a game we would want to play every day, in a world that we want to learn more about. This is a game for players and for us.
